Rangifer tarandus (лат) общее название североамериканских рас северного оленя; не приручен человеком. В Северной Америке обитают три разновидности карибу: арктический [Barren Grounds caribou], лесной [woodland caribou] и горный [mountain caribou]. Высота в холке до 150 см, толстая короткая шея, небольшая голова и огромные рога (на языке микмак [ Micmac] название означает "следы лап на снегу").
